Oxford v West Ham Carabao Cup Review

It’s not very often I swear on this blog but what the actual f**k was that last night?? Beaten 4-0 by a League One side? I’m not being derogatory to teams in League One but f**k me, West Ham are meant to be pushing for the top 6 in the Premier League!

I had to meet someone about some football related work so I never got to see the actual game and couldn’t listen to it either. And thank God I didn’t, otherwise I think my TV / radio / phone would have been smashed into numerous pieces.

On my way there my phone flashed up, via the West Ham twitter feed, that Wilshere had put us 1-0 up so I was all smiles and feeling good during the meeting.

But just as I came out of it, I looked at on my phone and it said we were 1-0 down! I then checked by through my phone to find out that West Ham has subsequently deleted the tweet.

Further to watching the highlights (or lowlights) today, I have no idea what happened to that Wilshere goal. Nothing shows what warranted the tweet. I thought maybe overruled by VAR or something but nope nothing. Can anyone shed light on it for me? Was it just another disaster by the West Ham media department akin to this time last year and a certain Mr Arnautovic video?

On social media, people are saying we should have gone with a first team line-up. But surely the players who were out on the pitch last night should be better than League One standard? They get paid as Premiership players and for me that means they should play like Premiership players regardless of the opposition. The same as any job.

Yes, I can understand Cup upsets do happen, but someone tell me when the last time a lower division side knocked a team in the top division out by 4 goals to nil?

There’s not a lot else can really be said about last night. Other than yet again West Ham ruin our dreams.

All my positivity from yesterday’s preview and the hope of this being our year went out the window.

I suppose we could roll out the old rhetoric that ‘at least we can concentrate on the league’ and yeah, finishing in the top 6 will get us the same Europa League place the Carabao Cup would. But I want a Wembley final to go to. I doubt we’ll get that through the FA Cup, especially if we continue to perform like we did last night.

The players and management need to take a good long look at themselves after that embarrassment. They better make up for it on Saturday!
