Ex West Ham goalkeeper Adrian has put pen to paper signing for Champions League winners Liverpool.
This turn of events today seems to have caused a bit of a hoo-ha among the West Ham faithful. Some fans have blasted the owners for trying to save money on wages, others have laughed at Adrian for leaving for ‘1st team’ football but ending up as understudy to Alisson. Some really couldn’t care less. I fall into the latter category.
The fact of the matter is Adrian wasn’t prepared to play second fiddle to Fabianski at West Ham. He wanted first team football. Who could blame him? Unfortunately for him, when he left the Hammers on 30th June, no club came calling offering the first team football he wanted.
However, with less than a week to the start of the season in comes Liverpool offering him the chance to double his wages (allegedly) and the possibility of playing Champions League football. He would have been a fool to turn that down in his quest for first team football!
What I find frustrating and ludicrous in all this is when there is a hint of positivity in our club (Fornals and Haller) our fans still want to find negativity (Roberto and Martin). It’s laughable that some are saying Sullivan, Gold & Brady got rid of Adrian and signed Martin and Roberto instead so as to reduce the wage bill. Yes, from what I’ve seen, neither are as good as Adrian but let’s not kid ourselves there was some underlying agenda to our No.2 goalie leaving.
There is no doubt Adrian was a bit of a fan favourite. The tweets, the declared love for West Ham, the fan rapport. And who could ever forget that penalty shootout against Everton? The way he slung off his gloves before scoring the decisive penalty to put us through to the next round. Although, I’m still unsure if it was done in the ‘I’ll not be needing these anymore’ but more in a ‘I’m more comfortable hitting this without these on’. Nonetheless, it was still an iconic moment under the lights at Upton Park.
Players come and go, I’m not going to be screaming out in a Rocky Balboa style ‘Adriannnn’, pining for an ex player who has just signed for the current Champions League winners! Fair play to the man!
